The Universal Need for the Word of God, and Why Our Children Need to Be Taught the Creation Story
Young adults are embracing a godless relativism, according to a recent study. (Barna Group, AFA Journal, June 2007, p.16) What is to be done? How do we teach the Word of God to a rising generation who have been taught the fashionable tenet that God is a myth? If you take away God, what is left? Moral relativism. How can we fortify our homes against the devastating consequences of this moral disconnect?
In ancient times, Lehi, a prophet of God in the Book of Mormon, had a vision which depicted clearly— in a manner which only Heavenly Father could portray— the mortal sojourn of God’s children. In Lehi’s dream, human nature stands out in bold relief.
The scenario shows multitudes of people pressing along a path beside which is a rod of iron. The purpose of the journey was to reach a beautiful tree and partake of its fruit, which gave great joy to the partakers. However, distractions along the way, including mists of darkness and a great and spacious building, caused many to lose their way.(1 Ne. 8:23)
A much smaller number succeeded in reaching the tree, partaking of the fruit, and being truly happy. These found joy by holding fast to that rod of iron, never letting go. They refused to be distracted, even after they partook of the fruit.
Darwinism and the “Wisdom of the World”
And I also cast my eyes round about, and beheld, on the other side of the river of water, a great and spacious building; and it stood as it were in the air, high above the earth. And it was filled with people, both old and young, both male and female; and their manner of dress was exceedingly fine; and they were in the attitude of mocking and pointing their fingers towards those who had come at and were partaking of the fruit. (1 Ne. 8:26,27)
The Lord told Nephi that the iron rod represented the Word of God, and the great and spacious building represented the “world and the wisdom thereof.” (1 Nephi 11:35) This “wisdom” of the modern world began in the late nineteenth century, when intellectuals began teaching that God was not the Creator of the earth. This led to a rejection of God altogether. Thus atheism took over the schools. Then the students went forth into politics, journalism, the legal profession, the movies, etc. As adults, these atheists
• banned prayer and scriptures from schools by judicial decree • passed laws making the taking of innocent human life legal • produced thousands of movies scorning believers • promoted atheism in the press. The multitudes who detoured into the great and spacious building lost their grip on the iron rod. Then when the mists of darkness arose, these people did not have a chance.
